How to tell someone they have Mesothelioma

A person who is diagnosed with mesothelioma has many things to worry about, both emotional and logistical.  But one extremely personal question often looms uppermost: How to tell the bad news to their family, loved ones and others. There are some guidelines to follow that can make this process less painful.

The first step is to decide who you will tell about your diagnosis.  This will include your spouse, children and parents, but beyond that, you may be uncertain about who else to tell and when. A person’s circle generally extends from best friends, to other good friends, to acquaintances and other people you know socially. There are also non-immediate family members to consider, as well as work colleagues who you may not feel emotionally close to, but may need to know because illness and treatment will affect your work schedule.

A good rule of thumb is to consider telling anyone who is close enough to you that they would feel hurt or regretful if they did not know about your illness.  Make a list of people you want to tell about your diagnosis face to face. You will also want to decide when to tell them. Choose a time when neither of you will be rushed for time and you can process any reaction they have.

When telling someone about your diagnosis, including the facts, including what type of mesothelioma you have, what this disease is, what treatments you will be undergoing and what your prognosis is. Be prepared for a variety of reactions, from shock and numbness to guilt. Be empathetic and prepared to answer any questions.  However, be aware that these conversations may be draining for you. Others may express guilt that you feel the need to assuage, or insist that the diagnosis cannot really be as serious as it is. You may want to find a therapist or trusted friend you can talk to about these interactions after the fact.

Friends will likely offer to help; be prepared to tell them what concrete help they can offer, such as bringing meals or driving you to medical appointments.  There are some strategies you can use to avoid the stress of delivering bad news to many people.  For your family, you can hold a family meeting with all of them at once. For friends, you can tell a few trusted friends, then ask them to tell others in your circle about your diagnosis. And at work, you can have a supervisor or someone in HR get the word out.

When telling children about a diagnosis of mesothelioma, you will need to calm their fears with some basic facts: That they are not to blame for what happened, they cannot catch mesothelioma, and that they will always be protected and taken care of.
