Some cancers are affected by a person’s lifestyle choices, while others seem to spring up at random. Mesothelioma is largely associated with one specific aspect of a person’s life: occupation.  If a person has worked at a job where they handled or were exposed to asbestos for significant periods of time, they are much more likely to develop cancer of the mesothelium.
High among risk factors is working in a job where one is in direct contact with asbestos through mining, installing or removing it. Asbestos mining has taken place in the US since the late 1900s and reached its peak in the 1970s; the large open pit mines allowed asbestos fibers into the air, and workers often did not wear ventilators. Similar problems applied for any worker in a factory processing the mined silica into commercial products like insulation.
Construction is also an at-risk industry, since anyone working on a building that used asbestos insulation handled it and worked around it for long periods of time. The same applies to anyone who worked in demolition: Being around old insulation poses special risks because being damaged or torn makes it more likely that fibers will come off and float in the air. Electricians often drill into walls to access wiring; they may drill or cut into asbestos without expecting to or even recognizing it.

All these risks were at their peak in the middle decades of the twentieth century, when asbestos was most widely used. At especially high risk were workers in shipyards.  Ships in the twentieth century were often packed with asbestos throughout, in order to reduce the risk of fire and insulate hot machinery like boilers. Workers who installed the insulation were exposed to it, as were welders, plumbers and electricians.
For these reasons, death certificates show that most mesothelioma victims were in industrial occupations (61 percent), followed by construction (about 14 percent). However, this does not account for all victims, since just being in a building with asbestos insulation is a risk factor.  Many government buildings used large amounts of the material, leading to exposure among elementary and high school teachers. They account for about 3 to 4 percent of deaths. This is also a risk for librarians and other government workers.
One section of workers who were highly prone to exposure is military veterans.  Service members both live and work in military buildings and ships, and throughout the 1940s to 1980s, these tended to have high amounts of asbestos. Anyone who has worked in one of these industries should be aware of their at-risk status.  They may be entitled to legal compensation or other benefits.
