The most distinctive asbestos-related condition is cancer of the membrane lining the lungs – pleural mesothelioma.  But it’s not the only way asbestos can affect the lungs. Asbestos fibers can also become lodged in the internal tissue of the lungs, eventually causing lung cancer.

Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer in America. However, most cases (90 percent) are caused by smoking. Just 4 percent of lung cancer deaths are associated with asbestos, but this accounts for 4800 deaths a year. This makes lung cancer the most common form of asbestos-related death.
The dangers of asbestos have been widely known for over 40 years.  This fibrous mineral material was once ubiquitous as insulation due to its fireproof and heatproof qualities.  But it poses a danger to those around it: Microscopic fibers can come loose from the insulation and be inhaled, becoming lodged in the tissue of the lungs.  They never decompose and will remain there for decades. The size of the fibers helps determine how far they will travel: smaller fibers are more likely to make their way to the outer lining of the lungs, while slightly larger ones remain in the lung tissue itself.  Wherever these tissues fibers end up, they cause cells to die, and other nearby cells to develop harmful mutations.  When a cell mutates in such a way that it begins dividing uncontrollably, this is the start of tumor formation.

Symptoms of asbestos lung cancer are similar to those for pleural mesothelioma: coughing, shortness of breath and unexplained weight loss.  Life expectancy is also similar, with patients typically living for about 6 to 18 months after diagnosis. Determining whether a specific case of lung cancer was caused by asbestos depends on how long ago exposure occurred: It generally takes at least 10 years after exposure to develop.

Among people who have been exposed to asbestos, smoking greatly increases cancer risk because it increases the likelihood that fibers will stay trapped in the lungs.  Treatments for asbestos lung cancer are generally the same as for pleural mesothelioma: chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, in which the lung or a portion of it is removed. Phototherapy has also been effective for lung cancer.  The specific doses and treatments plants will be different depending on what cancer one has. Long term survival rates are slightly better: the 50-year survival rate is about 18 percent, compared to 5 to 10 percent for pleural mesothelioma.

Finally, as with all asbestos cancers, sufferers may be entitled to legal compensation if they were put at risk by an employer, or treatment and benefits from the VA if they were exposed during military service.
