Malignant Mesothelioma

Of all diseases, cancers are among the most difficult to treat.  One that remains challenging to medical science is malignant mesothelioma, or cancer of the mesothelium.  In this disease tumors develop in the membrane lining bodily organs including the lungs, heart and abdominal cavity.  Mesothelioma is distinctive because of its rarity (it accounts for just 3000 cases in the US each year) and because it almost always stems from the same cause: exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos is a material made from silica fibers that is used to insulate and fireproof buildings, ships and vehicles.  It began to be used widely in the early 20th century especially after 1940. When tiny silica fibers break off and float in the air, people can breathe them in; the fibers remain in the body for years, causing cell death and the release of mutation-causing proteins from the dying cells.  This process takes a long time; after a person has been exposed, the disease may take 20 to 50 years to develop.  The dangers of asbestos began to be widely publicized in the 1970s, and in the following years, many workplaces have stopped using it or begun to remove it. However, millions of people have been exposed, and about 2,500 per year will die of it in the US each year.

The term “malignant” refers to the dangerous and deadly nature of cancerous tumors.  While there is a benign form of mesothelioma, in which the tumors do not spread or invade other areas of the body, it is very rare.  Cancerous tumors are defined by their ability to not only grow uncontrollably, but to spread to other areas of the body.  This process begins when a cell acquires a harmful mutation and begins dividing uncontrollably.  Healthy cells within the body multiply only when growing new tissue is beneficial for an organ, and are programmed to die when they have reached the end of their useful life.  Cancer cells seem to “ignore” this programming, growing larger and impairing the functioning of the body parts they are attached to.  They can also detach from tumors and begin forming new ones in other places in the body.

Mesothelioma does not afflict a specific organ, but rather a type of tissue, the mesothelium, that lines the heart, lungs and abdominal cavity.  It most commonly occurs in the lungs because that is where the asbestos fibers anchor themselves.  The common warning signs are coughing, shortness of breath, chest and abdominal pain, and, for mesothelioma of the abdominal lining, loss of appetite, nausea and weight loss.  This disease is rarely detected in its early stages because it develops deep within the body, and its symptoms can be ignored or misdiagnosed.

Once diagnosed, mesothelioma has a life expectancy of around 6 to 18 months. The most effective treatment is a multimodal approach that combines radiation and chemotherapy with surgery to remove the lung or other affected parts of the body. For patients in the later stages, treatment can shrink tumors in order to reduce pain and other side effects.
