With any serious disease, the first question for anyone who’s been diagnosed is how long they can expect to live.  Statistics can’t predict the specifics of an individual’s situation, but they can provide some clarity on typical outcomes for a disease.  The term survival rate refers to the percentage of people who survive for a given amount of time after diagnosis – often one, three or five years.
Survival rates don’t indicate whether a person has been cured or whether their cancer is continuing to spread.  They can’t measure the quality of life of a survivor, but they do suggest how fast the disease spreads, how much it interferes with vital bodily functions, and how effective treatments are. Survival rates for different cancers vary widely.  For prostate cancer, the death rate at 5 years is just .8 percent, and for thyroid and skin cancer, it’s under 10 percent; by contrast, the 5-year survival rate for gallbladder cancer is just 3 percent.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that remains asymptomatic for a long time, whose symptoms are easily overlooked, and which spreads quickly once tumors start to grow. It affects vital organs like the lungs and heart.  For these reason, survival rates are relatively low. Overall, 55 percent of patients diagnosed will be alive 6 months after diagnosis; after 12 months, the percentage drops to 33, and after 5 years, to 9 percent.  Survival rates are slowly improving with the introduction of new treatments.
The type of treatment a patient undergoes affects the survival rate.  For instance, among sufferers of pleural mesothelioma who undergo extrapleural pneumonectomy (the removal of a lung and surrounding tissue), the 5-year survival rate jumps to 12 percent.  This is affected by the fact that patients diagnosed at an earlier stage are more likely to be considered good candidates for surgery and other aggressive treatment.  Demographic factors also play a role.  Women have a 5-year survival rate of around 16 percent as opposed to 9.  Younger people fare better.  And stage of diagnosis is highly significant. Pleural mesothelioma patients diagnosed at stage 1 will live an average of 21 months, as opposed to 12 months at stage 4.

The lack of highly effective treatments is a factor in the relatively low mesothelioma survival rates.  It is likely that research continues and treatments like immunotherapy and genetic therapy become available, it will continue to rise.
