One hallmark of mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases is that they can be triggered by exposure that lasts just a very short time.  While workers who are exposed to small amounts of asbestos on a regular basis can suffer scarring, mesothelioma and cancer, so too can people who breathe in large amounts within a few hours or days. However, anyone who lived or worked in lower Manhattan was also exposed to some extent.

The statistics are alarming.  While mesothelioma usually takes 10 to 50 years to develop, one first responder was diagnosed just 5 years after the attacks.
