Mesothelioma Veterans

People who serve in the armed forces are exposed to many immediate risks, but they also face dangers that can take years or decades to manifest themselves.  One such danger is mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that affects the cells lining the abdomen, heart and lungs.  This disease is especially common among former service members because of its cause: asbestos, a fibrous form of insulation often used to fireproof homes and workplaces. For decades, asbestos was widely used in military vehicles and buildings, leading to high levels of exposure for those who lived and worked there.

When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they remain in the body for a long time, and can kill cells they come in contact with.  Before dying, the cells are prompted by the asbestos to release harmful proteins that create mutations in other cells and cause tumors to develop.  The dangers of asbestos began to be well publicized in the 1970s; however, by that time, it had already been in widespread use in the military, as insulation for pipes and wiring, as well as in other applications like brake and clutch pads. Service people were at high risk of exposure due to the close quarters and high amount of time they spend in military housing and vehicles—one third of diagnosed mesothelioma cases in the US are in veterans.

The military began removing and replacing asbestos in its facilities in the 1970s; as a result, those who served from the 1940s to 1980s are at highest risk.  However, because the process of removing asbestos took some time, those who served later (such as in the Iraq and Afghanistan) are also at risk.  Most of the millions of veterans living today have been exposed to asbestos, with Navy veterans having the highest levels of exposure due to high volumes of the substance on Navy ships.  Even family members can be at risk due to secondary exposure from fibers transmitted on clothing.
Mesothelioma can take years to decades to develop, so veterans should consider themselves at high risk no matter how long ago they served.  Veterans should be aware of mesothelioma symptoms, such as coughing and chest pain, that can be mistaken for something else.  They should always take possible warning signs seriously, inform doctors of their veteran status, and request an X-ray or blood test that can diagnose the disease.

The Veterans’ Administration recognizes mesothelioma as a service-related condition, whether it developed during or after service.  Those who are diagnosed with it are entitled to healthcare within the VA system.  They are also entitled to disability payments, monthly compensation and death benefits for surviving family members.  If a patient needs to travel to a particular facility for treatment, the VA may pay their expenses.  VA hospitals often conduct clinical trials of experimental treatments; by taking part in these trials, patients can gain access to drugs and procedures that may not be available to the public for years.  To find out more about benefits and services they are entitled to, veterans should contact a VA representative.
