If you have been exposed to asbestos at some point in your life, knowing the facts about mesothelioma can help you put your risk in context.  The first statistic to be aware of is cause: Asbestos exposure is by far the biggest risk factor for developing mesothelioma, accounting for almost all cases.

Of people who have been exposed to high levels of asbestos for extended periods of time, 2 to 10 percent will develop this relatively rare form of cancer. The number of people exposed is high, especially between the years of 1940 and 1978 (when asbestos began being removed from military installations and other workplaces). Experts estimate that about 11 million people were exposed in those years. The disease is especially hard to diagnose because of the long period of time between exposure and its developing: 20 to 50 years, with an average latency period of about 47 years for men and 53 years for women.

The most common way people become exposed is by serving in the military or working in an occupation with high exposure, such as construction and silica mining. Exposure levels have dropped compared to the high points in the 1960s and 70s, but due to the long latency period, new cases continue to emerge. Each year about 3000 people are diagnosed with the disease.
In the years since 2000, mesothelioma has killed about 2,500 people per year. Because most people exposed to asbestos through their job are male, men are 4.6 times more likely than women to suffer from it. And older people are more likely to be diagnosed: those over 60 are 10 times more likely to be diagnosed than people under 40, with 90 percent of cases taking place in people over 55. Average age of diagnosis is 74.

Death rates vary by state; those with the highest rates include Texas, California, Massachusetts and many Midwestern states, while those with low numbers include Alaska and Hawaii.
Life expectancy for pleural mesothelioma is about 12 to 18 months, for peritoneal about a year, and for pericardial about 6 months. Overall, 40 percent of pleural mesothelioma cases survive for a year after diagnosis, while just 8 percent survive for 5 years, speaking to the need for research into better treatment options. These rates vary by gender: The rate is about 13.5 percent for women, 4.5 for men. The reasons for this are not fully understood.  Patients who are diagnosed very early survive almost twice as long as those diagnosed late: about 21 months for stage 1, about 12 months for stage 4. About 5 to 10 percent live for 5 or more years after diagnosis.

While mesothelioma is a significant problem in the US, it is also an issue worldwide, killing 43,000 people yearly. The highest rates are in Belgium and Great Britain. Over 60 countries have banned asbestos, including countries in Europe, Africa and South America.
