Among the approximately 3,000 Americans per year who are diagnosed with mesothelioma, women are a unique group.  Most women victims did not become exposed to asbestos through the most common routes: industrial, construction or military work. Very few women worked in these fields in the years when asbestos use was at its peak. Nevertheless, there are a number of factors that can put women at risk for asbestos diseases.

Women contract mesothelioma much less than men, at a rate of about 5 per million as opposed to 18 per million.  Women are more than 4 times less likely to get the disease.  Among women who do get it, they are exposed in different ways. Some women work in male-dominated fields like construction, or have served in the military, where all housing and ships were once contaminated with the substance.
Many more were put at risk through secondhand exposure when their husbands, who worked with asbestos, came home with the substance on their clothes and hair.  These women often breathed in fibers while doing their husband’s laundry, but tracked-in fibers becoming embedded in carpets and furniture would also have been an issue. There is no safe exposure level, and this form of exposure can be enough to harm a person.

There have also been cases of women working jobs like teacher or librarian who acquired mesothelioma after having worked in a school or other building that with asbestos insulation. For people who live near mining towns, environmental contamination is a factor.
For many of these victims, receiving the compensation they deserve can be challenging, since the main route to receiving funds is through trust funds or lawsuits brought against employers who put workers at risk. When the victim was never an employee, it can be difficult to obtain such funds; women with mesothelioma should consider consulting a legal expert about possible routes to getting the compensation they deserve.  Women whose husbands or other family members worked with asbestos should also consider themselves at risk and report any suspicious symptoms to their doctors.

Among women who are diagnosed, the prognosis is slightly better than for men, although it is not entirely clear why this is. One study found that women with epithelial mesothelioma lived an average of 27 months as opposed to 18 for men, but the rates were the same for pleural mesothelioma. It also appears that women are more likely than man to acquire the epithelial version of the disease.
Another small subgroup of women victims are those who have used certain cosmetic talcs, including the brand Cashmere Mist.  The reason is that talc and asbestos occur naturally in some of the same areas, and the products became contaminated. Women who used Cashmere Mist and developed mesothelioma have won lawsuits against the manufacturer.
