The path to diagnosing any disease begins when a patient notices a symptom and reports it to a doctor.  With mesothelioma, multiple factors complicate this process.  Symptoms may not appear until the disease is well developed. The symptoms of this disease are not especially distinctive, leading to a high probability that they will be mistaken for something else, like a cold. There is no routine cancer screening for people with asbestos exposure, despite their high level of risk.  The most common symptoms for pleural mesothelioma sufferers include chest pain and breathing problems like coughing and shortness of breath. For the other varieties, symptoms include stomach pain, loss of appetite and nausea.  Eventually, the patient will describe their symptoms to a primary care doctor; hopefully, they will reveal any history of asbestos exposure.  If not, the doctor may ask.  If the doctor suspects the symptoms could be serious, they will request an imaging test or other diagnostic test.
These include:

X-ray. These can show fluid buildup in the lungs or abdomen. They cannot reveal tumors until they are far advanced, so x-rays by themselves may not diagnose the problem.  Fluid in the lungs is often caused by pneumonia, so doctors may begin treatment by attempting to cure what they believe is an infection.

CT scan. a computerized tomography scan combines multiple x-rays taken from different angles to create a 3-D map of the body. This can more effectively identify the presence of a tumor.
Pet scan: This test involves injecting a patient with dye that contains radioactive tracers.  They are absorbed into the body’s tissues, and when scanned by a PET scanner equipped with a special camera, they allow doctors to see the layout of the body as well as how it is functioning in real time. This can capture processes like tumor metabolism.

Certain blood tests can check for the presence of proteins associated with mesothelioma, although they are not 100 percent effective. Finally, imaging can reveal whether there is a mass in a certain part of the body, but not all masses are cancerous (benign tumors also exist). Doctors can confirm the existence of cancer by performing a biopsy, extracting tumor cells through a thin needle or tube and performing tests on them. If cancer has spread to multiple locations, a biopsy can reveal where it began.

If a primary care doctor suspects the presence of cancer based on x-rays or other evidence, he or she will likely refer the patient to an oncologist. The process of diagnosis may also involve false starts, as the doctor attempts treatment for more common diseases like pneumonia, and then reconsiders when treatment fails.
